For the culinary record

Sushi rolls made with tortillas because you have no seaweed have considerably greater structural strength than those made more traditionally. On the other hand it's surprising how much taste a tortilla has, and that taste is not all that appropriate to sushi rolls.

The potential that this has raised for me now is for "mex-sushi", which is basically a tortilla wrap but with stickier rice and rolled like a sushi roll. Think of a standard roll, but with, say, strips of beef and pepper in the middle, and with sour cream and chilli sauce inside too. I think that avenue is definitely worth going down, or at least peering down while standing at the well-lit corner with Sensible Street.

Here is a bad webcam picture of an over-exposed Instax picture of a cat called Piper wondering what the hell I am doing trying to make sushi with tortillas:

A Manhattan does need a cherry in it. Either that, or making it with dry vermouth is a slight mistake. This should be a surprisingly relaxing cocktail on the tongue. Still, not too bad.

A proper Margarita next, and it is surprising how much better a proper one is compared to what is served in pitchers in faux-Mexican restaurants and urban meat-market chain bars. Well, probably not all that surprising, but it is a Good Drink.

#FridayFlash - Cinnamon buns

The genesis of this story comes from a former coworker of mine stopping by the office this week with cinnamon buns for the staff. I tweeted about it, as you do, and one of my Nanowrimo colleagues misread it as me claiming a former cowboy was brining us cinnamon buns; I liked the image enough to base this week's story on it :o)

(And, yes, I know, it's only Thursday, but with tomorrow being a holiday, I decided to get this one in early, as I most likely won't be at my PC tomorrow at all)

I watched Repo: The Genetic Opera last night. God it was shit. Oddly I think it was due to a bad creative process that ended up with them being silly when they should be serious and serious when they should be silly. The fact that there was only two good songs in it (the one with the Gravedigger singing about how the illicit version of the drug works and the one with Blind Mag visiting Shilo) don't help either. However, Terrance Zdunich, goth yummyness.

Brought to you by ...

Some highlights from today.  I:
cooked chili in a crockpot
baked some chocolate chip cookies for Christmas
composed some new fiction (both in an LJ community and for a new idea I've had that I've been writing with pen and paper, in a cursive style)
cleared out my inbox by replying to some messages that had been piling up.
cleaned up the kitchen.

I don't know about y'all, but clearly my day was brought to us by the letter C.

digging out

Got out of work a couple hours early, so I hurried home and spent an hour or so digging out our plowed in car. I tried my best to dispose of the snow in a way that wouldn't just make it someone else's problem, mostly piling it against our house and in the strip between the sidewalk and the street. This fastidiousness greatly bothered one of my neighbors who harangued me for ten minutes, demanding that I should just dump the snow in the street for the plows to clean up. I laughed, thinking she was joking, which made her think I was even stupider than she'd previously assessed. I didn't have it in me to argue that any snow the plow pushed away was justgoing to end up blocking in someone else's car or street. But that's South Philly for you. Most of them will just leave their car (or cars) buried until the snow melts.

I, on the other hand, will, weather permitting, now be able to drive all over creation on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, making all my expected visits. Not to mention finally getting some Christmas shopping done.
